Theoretical Designs
The Empress of Virginia by Carelton w. bluford
In my third scenic studio, I scenic designed The Empress of Virginia by Carleton W. Bluford. I was required to provide research, concept statements, renderings, 1/4" scale models, and a ground plan and section of the stage. The Empress was set at the Arden Theatre and my concept statement is, The Empress of Virginia is a banging water hammer bursting the corroded pipe of racism. I also did the costume design for The Empress of Virginia. All renderings are done in photoshop using the 1/4" scale model.
Parade by Alfred Uhry
In my third scenic studio, I scenic designed Parade by Alfred Uhry. I was required to provide research, concept statements, renderings, 1/4" scale models, and a ground plan and section of the stage. Parade was set at Theatre J in Washington DC. The concept statement is, Parade is clinching to the preserved pieces of identity and home. All renderings are done in photoshop using the 1/4" scale model.
Eurydice by Sarah rule
I designed Eurydice by Sarah Rule and the concept statement is, Eurydice is hypnotized by the burden of free will. I wanted to express the fine line between meditation and hypnosis. I also wanted to focus on the difficulty with the decision Eurydice faces. The project required a light source inside the model so I used LEDs inside a resin filled pool. I built the pool out of board cut to size on the laser cutter and layered, covered in modeling past, and filled with melted resin. The hands were 3D printed and used as the rocks. The large hands along the stairs are the 'Rocks' characters which I conceived from inspiration from Labyrinth with David Bowe. To the left, I have images of the model, my inspiration board, and ground plan.
The Odyssey by Mary Zimmerman
In my Scenic Studio class, we had the great pleasure to host a masterclass with Mary Zimmerman with her play, The Odyssey. This was a three day design masterclass which began with us presenting our design concepts to Mary for critique. Then each day we met with her we discussed our concepts, received notes and returned the following day with edited models, renderings, and research. My concept was following Odysseus and his family through the turmoils of post-war life and the struggles of PTSD. My setting is a bombed urban bridge which Odysseus is living under at the top of the show, while enslaved by Calypso. The concept was heavily influenced by the psychological warfare which rips into soldiers post war and masked art-therapy techniques for revealing trauma and confronting it.
Ubu Roy by Alfred jarry
My Ubu Roi design was submitted into the Prague Quadrennial Common Design project. My concept for Ubu Roi was to create an immersive experience where the audience becomes more than spectators but rather characters in this complex play. The show would take place in a found space such as the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel in New York City. The show would span across four scenic locations- the Ubu home, the castle, the cave and the final descent climbing over a mound of sewer trash. The audience would have free range to explore the content of the tunnel and fully immerse themselves in the scenes as they would wear masks to ensure their anonymity. My concept statement for Ubu Roi is- The Play Ubu Roi is like watching scum pile up on a sewer vent.
